Christmas day…..er…I mean opening day
at Blackcomb Nov 20, 2004
Round Trip: 15 hrs NV to NV
Base Elevation: mid mtn
Peak Elevation: top of Solar Coaster +
Elevation Gain: lots of quad crushing, calf eating vertical feet
Face shots, rock shots, ditch jumping and 4X4ing
over anything in our paths. Early season riding at it’s finest.
It’s one of those days you long for, only comes around once
a year, not usually the same day or the same conditions. Didn’t
get a very good sleep last night…..to anxious about sliding
around. 5:00am comes quick, funny how it’s a lot easier to
get up at this un-godly hour when your off to the mtn opposed to
being off to work……..working on the early retirement
plan………what’s it called?.......freedom 39?
6:00 at Stefs to get into the diesel rocket, it
was a quick trip at that hour, not much traffic, the new additions
to the sea2sky racecourse and a shot of caffeine equals being in
line at 8:30ish, gotta be close to the front of the line!! Funny
thing…..I consider Intrawest to be one of the biggest drug
dealers around and they dictate price……..2 lifts for
$40 bucks, that’s a smoke’n deal, kind of like…..well
let’s not go there. Thank god for 2 4 1’s, Hanna owes
big time. But yeah, when demand goes up price goes up, later season
they drop the price to encourage the locals to slide on the scraps.
Don’t get me wrong, I love her and her drug dealing ways………..can
I have just a little more?
The Freeze Factor psychos were at the front of
the lift line doing their thing, not sure if it would be worth it……..but
I guess if your from back east, it would be totally worth it. Onwards……up
the lift, from green and brown to white winter wonderland, there
was big buck and two does that looked like decoys on the way up,
until one moved their head, they looked stuffed…….I
was thinking “way to go Intrawest, enhance the whole tourist
experience with some wildlife”. Sun was coming up over the
horizon, shining on the Peak at Whistler, slowly rising to enhance
the already beautiful view. Wedge Mt looking ominous to the north,
the Sudan untouched (that was a hard one for Gav to swallow) for
now, across the valley was fully lit up by UV’s.
Stef and I started lapping Jersey, filling our
boots with some wicked pow. New run each time, getting a little
more daring with the rock boards in full effect. Good coverage overall,
but lot’s of exposure. Finally hooked up with Gavin, Braiden
and Damien….all skiers, I don’t hold it against them
cause there good. This is where the intensity factory got cranked
up a few notches, I lost them right away, thinking I knew where
I was going, doh!! Thank god there were only 2 chairs, found them
next run. Cycling Solar, the boyz knew where to find the goods,
we followed and enjoyed every minute of it even the tree inspections.
Up top was powder paradise, lower Solar, was boney, thin, exposed,
whatever you want to call it. Through bushes, over rocks & ditches,
etc. Only one good pile and I missed it, I guess Braiden wanted
a closer inspection of the gravel on the run so over a rise and
body checked the ground, with a skiff of snow on it…….ouch!!!
Big bonus, I packed a lumberjack lunch, so after
shredding all the lift accessed terrain up we decided to hike. Lunch,
beverages and the last of our party to join us: Jamie, we headed
for untracked pow. An hour and half later, running on empty, first
day of the season, I was worked, Stef made it….good work dude!
The rest of the boys were in hyper mode. Finally at the destination,
a pic-nic or should I say feeding frenzy took place, packed up,
rested a little, reviewed options and laid down some nice tracks.
Brilliant, breathtaking, the sound of powder under the board, zen
like…….ohhhh ahhhh, it’s like getting a bike after
a 7 month hiatus. “STOP!!!! I can’t move my leg, it’s
locked up!!” says Stef half way down, he had a hard time getting
down to Jersey. I would call it a major CRAMP, ouch. It could have
been a mid season pow day for all we knew as we downloaded to the
village, back to the green and brown.
Small world, ran into Dave & Jordie separately,
Stef knew Lara on the first chair up, brief encounter with Colin.
Hanna missed out…..what for? He knows and paid for it dearly..
ha ha. Back to the show……..planned to meet up with the
boyz to celebrate the day with a few cold ones, some chin waggin
and a HOT tub…..thx Gav, my legs thank you. Love the drive
home after a full day, Stef was not liking the clutch. Christy called
Sushiman for an order of the good stuff, we picked it up at the
Sushiman Steamroom (don’t ask) and proceeded to inhale the
goods, Stef wouldn’t do the Wasabi dare….not even for
$15. Another day, another 15K of vert.
Life’s one road trip after another…..
